Review: Drains

Reactions:
Drains is mainly a platform game that plays underwater. In the game our hero's boat gets sunken by a mysterious sword and he wakes up underwater alive. Drains has a huge story behind involving a Sea King that conquered the undersea world, and it will slowly become clear that you need to stop him and save the innocent people that live down below. The game is played from a certain fixed perspective were the player can move around in 3d. The graphics are gorgeous and lots of time has been spend in making the undersea world into a living breathing world, including undersea towns. You see not only is drains a platform game, it features some RPG elements as well, were you can upgrade yourself to become stronger and even talk to townspeople.

The game does have a bit of a learning curve and especially in the beginning were our hero is still a bit weak and you will die quickly. You get 3 lives in the game and if you happen to die then you start from your last save point within a level. If you loose all 3 lives you are transported back to the world map and you can try the level again with 3 lives. This can be a bit frustrating, even more so if you are being overrun by more then 3 enemies, who all try to kill you at the same time. Fighting enemies also sometimes feels like it could have been tightened up a bit more especially if you are fighting with more then 1 enemy. My suggestion would be to stick with it and try again and also to try out different tactics to defeat these enemies, because an entire huge world will be awaiting you, with a very interesting and action packed story that I wont spoil to much about here in this review.

I especially enjoyed the RPG elements in between the action were you can talk to towns people and sometimes even solve little puzzles for example escaping out of a prison cell. You are greatly rewarded for sticking with Drains until its shocking end. Also a special note goes out to the music and sound effects that also compliments the world you now found yourself in. So yes while Drains has a bit of a learning curve especially in the beginning I still highly recommend this game for its great story and its combination of platforming and RPG elements in a huge underwater world. This is an adventure you really do not want to miss!
